Artist Statement.

As I started the Writing and Design for Musical Theater (WDMT) program, I fell into the trap that a lot of young writers do. I was looking to write something extremely serious and tragic. However, after a more serious project got stalled, my writing partner Carter Quinn Tanis and I shifted to a different idea, which became RSVP No! a new queer musical rom-com. From the experience of learning how to write musical comedy, I learned the value of making people laugh and be happy. From my time at the University of Virginia, double majoring in Music and Public Policy, I learned that people who don’t make art expect it to make a “dramatic” statement. However, in a time that is so dark, creating joy is a statement in itself, and sometimes we learn more about the world from what makes us laugh, rather than what makes us cry.
